Hello,

I am new to the forum and am looking for suggestions regarding the best food for my Mastiff puppy. I know that there are many variables and that all dogs respond differently but perhaps others have had similar experiences. My pup, Winston, is just over 4 months and has been on Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy for 2 months now. He has very loose stools (equivalent of mud pies) several times a day. I have read others who have had the same experience with Blue Buffalo. I was thinking of swithching to 4Health but noticed that they do not make a large breed puppy formula and some reviews also indicate that loose stools is a problem. I was thinking of mixing the 4Health Puppy formula with the Large Breed Adult formula. Thoughts on this? Or other recommendations??

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and suggestions!
Lisa

Welcome to MOC! I would check out Bill's top food list located in the Dog Dish part of the forum. 4Health is a good food, and many have success with it. Each food affects each dog differently though. We raw feed Dagny as we were unable to find a kibble that sat well with her.

I moved your post to the Dog Dish for more exposure. Smile

Blue Buffalo is one of those foods that either work or lead to diarrhea. Sounds like it's the latter for your pup.

4Health is good quality. Not the best food out there but certainly tons better than junk like Pedigree, Purina, Science Diet, etc. They're basic formulas so often work well for dogs with sensitive tummies.

Welcome to MOC!!!! I used to feed 4health to my 1 year old and as soon as I switched, she started having cow patties. After we finished that bag, I startted her on Healthwise and the cow patties disappeared almost immediately. My first suggestion would be to make sure he doesnt have any parasites, then try a different food. When first making the switch, I bought a small 5 lb bag to make sure she liked it and that it firmed up her stool. That way, if she didnt like it or it didnt work, I didnt have a huge bag of dog food on my hands.

Good luck with everything and I cant wait to see pics of Winston!!

Ok not to be gross.. but what the heck would a cow patty look like? lollll I have 2 posts on this topic, one regarding if the food Maci is on was a good choice for a mastiff and another regarding her loose stool. Maci is now on the Blue Buffalo Wilderness line which is grain free. She had been on Merrick Puppy Plate and both passed as good choices with Bill. I'm inclined to think it's not the food causing Macis loose stool because her stool never changes. Even on boiled burger and rice. So I ordered the Bac PAC Plus enzymes and probiotics. She just started yesterday, so too soon to tell. But after reading this thread and seeing that Blue Buffalo is a brand known to cause loose stools in some dogs, maybe I should switch her to.... Whatever Bill feeds his dogs! lol

Bill did feed Fromm Smile
And so did I, and I am thinking of changing back.
My crew is on Taste of the Wild. Nova is doing well except for a dry, dull looking coat. Loki is having cow patty (think of making drop cookies, you drop a spoonful on the cookie sheet and it sort of plops down, a soft pile but not liquid.. like soft serve ice cream) stool.
Maggie eats Merrick and is doing well on it and will stay on it because it is one of the few things she likes to eat.

Fromm has a couple of grain free formulas and I placed an order yesterday for 2 bags, my store isn't carrying it yet. I will start a slow change probably next Sunday and see how things go Smile

lollllllllll I just placed an order for Fromm too! I went back through the threads and found where Bill said he used Fromms. I just started a big bag of the Blue Buffalo Wilderness, so I figure if the Fromm comes this week, I can slowly mix it in, until the Blue Buffalo is used up. If I switch her slowly enough, it can't hurt to try something else.

And TY on the cow patty explanation! lollll Maci has a formed movement once a day. Not one big log mind you, like a pile of smaller logs. Then the rest of the day is a COW PATTY! but i never would have known to explain it that way!! Hers isn't as sof as soft serve ice cream though.. probably the analogy of raw cookie dough, more explains the consistency. Doesn't this post just make ya want a cookie? lolll

It's funny you mention Nova's coat. I don't have an issue with Maci's coat, but when I was reading the ingredients in the FROMM.. I was thinking.. wow... seems like they put a lot of stuff in here to help with a nice, shiny coat!

Yep I've been feeding Fromm for about 3 years now. I switch between three formulas - Large Breed Adult Gold, 4-Star Chicken a la Veg and 4-Star Duck & Sweet Potato. Mine didn't care for the fish ones. I also sometimes throw in some of the 4-Star Grain Free Beef Fritatta. They also love the Fromm canned foods.

I can honestly say I have fallen in love with Earthborn holistic Gunny has had good weight gain, his coat is beautiful and shiny, no more soft serve poos. We have went through Purina Puppy chow (before bill's food reviews honestly didn't know any better) diamond naturals beef and rice, diamond naturals large breed puppy, and a couple of bags of different earthborn holistic. My husband thinks I am nuts with all my spreadsheets and figures. He didn't want to eat much so I was having a hard time finding a food that had a higher caloric value so he wouldn't have to eat as much. So if you have a nibbler like me I would definetly recommend earthborn holistic Adult vantage or the primitive natural. We tried both and gunny just preferred the adult over the primitive.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses! I'm impressed! I reviewed Bill's list and saw that 4Health was on there but if I am going to make a switch I would prefer to go with the highest quality possible so I may look into the Fromm's. I do have a follow up questions regarding grain free. I have read some information that suggests not feeding puppies grain free. What are your recommendations regarding this? And if a Large Breed Puppy formula is not available, is it better to go with the Puppy formula, Adult Large Breed or a combination of the two?

Thanks so much!

I know this sounds funny, but when I wanted to make the switch from Iams (which I thought was a good food until Bill explain to me that it was not, a big thank you on that one!!) I printed out Bill's economic dog food list and went to all my local stores to find out which ones carried what, list in hand. Unfortunately for me, 4health was the only thing that was around here, so I looked at ordering online. I found a website that someone had mentioned and was able to order great foods for good prices. And they have autoship, which is great!

**I know we arent supposed to post links, but I figured since these were in the forum that it would be ok. If not, please let me know, thanks!!**

Links are fine Smile You can post them almost any time and if you ever have any questions, ask a staff member Smile
Now back to the puppy food question. Not all puppy foods are formulated with growing giant breed dogs in hand. So I would read carefully and make sure the cal/phos ratios are in line with the recommendations
